[apsa_itp] course management website suggestions?

Hi folks:

I'm involved in a project where we are developing and assessing an AP government curriculum that includes a heavy dose of simulations and project based learning.

As part of this, we are looking for an open source course management website where students will manage their assignments and store stuff, where student teams can communicate and collaborate on documents, and where the instructor can easily monitor individual student contributions to these collective activities and grade assignments.

Google sites doesn't appear to have the tools to do the latter. Moodle does include some grading features. But before we dive into developing new tools, I thought I would ask  - does something similar already exist?
